Hartz IV ruling: now it's up to the parents

Many young adults live with their parents for a long time before setting up their own home. Young unemployed people in particular are often unable to afford the rent and are happy to have a room in their parents' home. However, if the offspring receives unemployment benefit II (ALG II), this can be a financial burden for the parents.

The reduction in the Hartz IV rate can be unpleasant for the whole family

The Federal Constitutional Court has just ruled on a tricky matter. According to its ruling, young adults under 25 must expect their Hartz IV rate to be reduced by 20 percent. This always applies if they are still living with their parents. Even if the parents are no longer liable to pay maintenance to their children. This is because the court assumes that the parents still support their children.
