Easter: the most important festival in Christianity
In the Christian tradition, Easter comes before Christmas. This may surprise you, as Christmas, when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, is the most wonderful time of the year for many people. Easter, on the other hand, is celebrated much less extensively. However, at Easter we commemorate the resurrection of Jesus after death. According to the Bible story, Christ was crucified on Good Friday. Two days later, the stone in front of his tomb was found rolled to one side. The tomb was empty. Nobody really wanted to believe that Jesus Christ had actually risen from the dead, but his body had still disappeared. Accordingly, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus two days after Good Friday, i.e. on Easter Sunday.
And why does the Easter bunny bring the Easter eggs?
Why the Easter bunny brings the eggs is not entirely clear. There are several possibilities as to why we tell our children today that the bunny brings the eggs. The most plausible explanation may be that the custom is based on the fertility of the hare . Rabbits give birth to many young in spring. Master Lamp therefore stands for fertility and life itself. The fact that we celebrate life and the resurrection from death at Easter is therefore symbolized in the hare. However, it could also simply be that parents invented the Easter bunny out of a need for explanation. It is clear to children that hens do not normally lay colored eggs. So who is responsible for the ones hidden under bushes and shrubs in the garden? The Easter bunny, of course! You always see free-range rabbits - so they must have brought the colorful eggs...
Easter and its traditions
Egg dyeing, traditional meals with lots of fish and light dishes on Good Friday and then the egg hunt and a delicious, extensive Easter brunch on Easter Sunday - the celebrations in German households are as colorful and varied as the eggs that we dye especially beautifully for the Christian festival. Whether you get together with the whole extended family, celebrate alone or just with your loved ones - there is one thing you should always do: Enjoy the holidays and the free time they bring! We've already answered the question of why we actually celebrate Easter. You can use this knowledge to make the most of this year's Easter celebrations.
We wish you lots of fun and a blessed Easter time!
