Estimates show that, on average, we have up to 60 different care, cleaning and cosmetic products in our households, many of which are harmful to the environment - and unnecessary. There are five very simple products that are perfectly adequate alternatives.
Vinegar: It has an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect. It can be used to make thorough all-purpose cleaners or rinse aids - normal table vinegar is usually sufficient for this. Only aluminum surfaces, natural stone floors or silicone joints should not be treated with vinegar, as they are easily attacked by the acid.
Baking soda: It has been used in a variety of ways for several thousand years, is inexpensive and works gently but effectively. As a cleaning agent, it disinfects and dissolves limescale. It is also a good degreaser, making it ideal for a homemade washing-up liquid. It also neutralizes acids.
Citric acid: Ideal for descaling household appliances, it also serves as a natural preservative for food and cosmetic products. Natural lemon juice contains around 5 to 8 percent citric acid, a few squirts are often enough to clean fittings.
Curd soap: It is slightly alkaline and therefore well suited to dissolving greasy soiling. It is indispensable in homemade detergent and an effective, mild stain remover. Curd soap can also be used to make numerous care products such as shampoo.
Soda: You can use it to boost the effect of conventional detergents and halve the amount of detergent required, for example - or make your own detergent. It attracts water and should always be stored in a dry, airtight container. It reacts more strongly than baking soda solutions and should not be used on surfaces containing aluminum or animal fibers.
