It's amazing what gets flushed down the drain or toilet - we tell you which 5 things do NOT belong there.

Zack - and gone? Or would it be better to say: out of sight, out of mind? You should be aware of what you flush down the drain or toilet, because some pollutants and waste can only be removed from the wastewater with a great deal of effort - if at all. You also cut yourself in half, because if you go too far, you will block your own pipes. The plumber who then has to be called is not exactly cheap. So be careful and dispose of it properly!

Drain stink: The 4 best household remedies for unpleasant odors

5 things that don't belong in the drain

1. medicines

Medicines dissolve in wastewater and are difficult or impossible to filter out of wastewater. According to the Federal Environment Agency, the level of contamination in groundwater should be around 2 percent and have no impact on health. However, with the increasing age of the population, a higher level of contamination is to be expected. Better: Dispose of your medication in household waste, recycling centers or pharmacies. Each district regulates this for itself.

2. dental floss

Dental floss in particular causes major problems for sewage treatment plants, as the threads clog the filters. They therefore have to be removed regularly, which takes a lot of time. Used dental floss clearly belongs in the household waste.

3. food waste and oils

Food scraps and kitchen waste are clearly a case for the organic waste garbage can and should not be disposed of down the drain. The problem with cooking oil is that it clogs the pipes from the inside and dirt gets stuck in them, causing the pipes to clog. Lubricating oils and fuels are an absolute no-go: even small amounts poison the waste water!

4. sanitary towels and panty liners

We shouldn't really have to mention this anymore, but sanitary towels and panty liners are still clogging up toilets in large numbers. It's so simple: just dispose of the toiletries in the household waste!

5. cigarette butts

Disposing of cigarette butts in the toilet is also really bad form. You have to flush them umpteen times until they are finally all gone - a completely unnecessary use of water. What's worse, they can contain up to 4,800 chemical substances and 250 toxins that are difficult to filter out in sewage treatment plants. Nobody wants to become a passive smoker via their drinking water, do they? Please dispose of cigarette butts in the residual waste!
