Choose the right cloth
The right cloth is important for proper dusting. Although dust sticks well to a damp cloth, it can easily leave a greasy film on furniture. Electrostatic cloths are much more suitable, especially for dust on larger surfaces. The dirt can be caught particularly quickly by carefully wiping over it with the cloth in the shape of a figure of eight.
Use a feather duster
For dusting books and CDs, it is worth using a good old feather duster. It is best to use ones with nylon fibers: They become electrostatically charged through friction on the surface, which attracts the dust and makes it stick to the feather duster. For electrical appliances, it is better to use a feather duster, as televisions and the like are themselves statically charged. An anti-static spray (from 5 euros, drugstore) applied directly after cleaning reduces the attraction of new dust.
Fold up correctly
Fold the cleaning cloth you are using to the size of the back of your hand. If you fold it up and down one after the other when wiping, you will have eight clean surfaces - and you won't have to keep shaking it out.
Easier to reach
A broom with a pillowcase wrapped around it also makes it easy to reach cobwebs and dust in apartments with high ceilings. The most effective way to clean radiators is to use an old trouser hanger with a damp cloth wrapped around it. A trick for proper dusting in inaccessible places: place or hang a damp cloth behind or under the radiator and blow through cracks and grooves with a hairdryer. The loose dust will stick to the cloth.
Cleaning upholstered furniture
Place a damp bed sheet over the dusty upholstered cushion and hit it several times with a carpet beater or tennis racket. The damp sheet will trap the dirt. Then simply put the sheet in the washing machine. The same principle also works well for car seats.
Avoid new dirt
Place as few dust catchers as possible in the home, such as figurines, pictures, cushions, heavy curtains and thick carpets. Place objects in display cabinets rather than openly. Vacuum regularly - and only dust afterwards, because vacuuming always stirs up dust.
