IKEA tightens return policy as of September 1, 2018

Furniture store giant IKEA previously had a unique right of return. The exchange mania of consumers is now to be finally put to an end on September 1, 2018.

IKEA verschärft Rückgaberecht zum 1. September 2018
IKEA puts a stop to consumers' exchange mania!

Without giving reasons and regardless of the condition: the money was returned within one year. Customers have made extensive use of this right of return. Until fall 2016, there was even an unlimited right of return! So this would be the second tightening:

Apparently, landlords are freshening up their apartments in this way.

"By restricting the right of return to unused products, we also want to ensure that customers do not dispose of furniture and furnishings after a short period of use, but rather appreciate the value of the product in terms of the resources used to make it," Ikea Germany boss Dennis Balslev told Die Welt. However, misuse should also be prevented. "We hear from the stores that year after year, shortly before the exchange deadline, the same people always turn up and demand their money back," said Balslev. "Apparently, this is how landlords freshen up their apartments."

New location planning at IKEA

IKEA also wants to change its location planning - instead of moving to outlying locations as usual, the Swedes will be moving to city centers in the future. The Hamburg Altona location is one example. City dwellers should of course be pleased, as IKEA should also be accessible to people without a car. However, the Altona example is not intended to set a 1:1 example, as the aim is to develop individual locations in the future - for example without warehouses, i.e. smaller. IKEA stores in pedestrian zones or shopping centers are therefore conceivable, Johannes Ferber, Head of Expansion at Ikea Germany, told Spiegel Online.
