Mallorca travel tips: The summer is getting turbulent
Temperatures are around 20 degrees, white daisies and red poppies are shining in the fields and blue wisteria and purple bougainvillea are blooming on the dry stone walls. But the "Isla de la Calma", the island of tranquillity, is preparing for a turbulent summer. A record 11 million holidaymakers are expected, a third of whom come from Germany. This means that in the party strongholds of El Arenal between Balnearios 4-7 and in Magaluf, people will be partying the night away - especially as the popular bucket drinking will probably be allowed again.
Undisturbed peace and quiet? There's that too!
Those who prefer to swim in peace and quiet are spoiled for choice among Mallorca's beaches: families with children prefer the gently sloping Platja de Muro in the bay of Alcúdia. Son Serra , which is still largely unspoiled, also prefers fewer and quieter bathers and has reduced the number of sunbeds and dispensed with surfboard and pedal boat hire. A small but picturesque beach is Sa Calobra, which can be found at the end of a 13-kilometre winding road between Pollença and Sóller. Getting there is part of the enjoyment.
Mallorca: travel tips for hikers and gourmets
If you are a hiker, you should probably head for the mountainous north and west of the island. Around the 1,445-metre-high Puig Major, tours lead through holm oak forests and valleys with almond and orange trees to small villages and dramatic cliffs. Current tours and lots of tips can be found in the Mallorca newspaper (freizeit.mallorcazeitung.es).
Gourmets will find restaurants galore on Mallorca. Many of them have already heard that the Gastro Oscar for the best Mallorcan cuisine was awarded to the restaurant " Can March" in Manacor, the best bakery was "Forn Can Salem" in Algaida and the best bar was the "Brassclub" in Palma. Culture vultures looking for Mallorca travel tips should make a note of Sunday, as the historic town hall in Palma can now be visited. And in the suburb of Cala Major, descendants of the famous painter are currently opening a "Miró Hotel", in which many original paintings hang. Our favorite island surprises its visitors and fans anew every year. And that is one reason why we remain loyal to it.
