Malta: The island of bliss

The defiant fortifications and bastions of the Order of St. John, nine bays and the proud trio of towns of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua as well as two natural harbors slowly pass you by. From the water, the silhouette of Valletta is particularly impressive. On the boat tour starting in Sliema, you will learn that the Grand Harbour is a natural harbour with a branching three-kilometre-long bay and, thanks to its strategic location in the Mediterranean, has already been visited by Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Spaniards.

Dreary backdrops in the most beautiful sunlight

In 1530, the Order of St. John settled in Malta and created magnificent baroque buildings, aristocratic palaces and churches. First and foremost was the lavishly decorated St. John's Co-Cathredral, where around 375 knights found their final resting place. There are a total of 365 places of worship in the tiny island state, which is barely larger than the city of Munich. But the island's rich cultural heritage also includes mysterious 7,000-year-old temples such as Tarxien, Hagar Qim and Mnajadra, the early Christian catacombs of Rabat and the white alleyways of Mdina surrounded by medieval walls.

Film sets wherever you look! In Hollywood, the island kingdom, where the second official language is English, has been very popular since the hit movie "Gladiator". More than a hundred films have now been shot in the dwarf state. This is also due to the glorious sunlight and mild climate. It is still over 20 degrees in October.

Picture-book motif for amateur photographers

The atmospheric harbour of Marsaxlokk with its traditional colorful fishing boats with eyes painted on the bow is a picture-book motif for amateur photographers. This is to protect against the evil eye. The harbor promenade of the fishing village is home to a daily market, which is particularly large and bustling on Sundays.

At weekends, Malta's small beaches and the bays framed by rocks are also full of life. Even Gozo, which can be reached by ferry, attracts crowds of bathers thanks to its one-kilometre-long sandy beach at Ramla Bay.

Fantastic sunsets with a view of Filfla

The little sister island also attracts attention with its Azure Window rock gate. Back on the main island, you should take a walk up the 250-metre-high Dingli Cliffs. Every bend in the path opens up spectacular views of the deep blue Mediterranean, the cliffs and some planted terraces. With a view of the small rocky island of Filfla, you can then experience a fantastic sunset - you are guaranteed never to forget these blissful moments!
