Blue waves, white beaches, dreamy bays and all just a few hours' drive from Hamburg. A vacation in the Danish South Seas - what more could you want?
Let's go, we're off to the South Seas! And by car. After all, why go far away when wonderful white, gently sloping beaches and mild summer weather await us just across the border? The southeast of Denmark between Lolland and Funen is the place to go on vacation in the Danish South Sea. It also includes Langeland, Møn, Æerø and the many scattered Baltic Sea islands in between. Instead of large bed castles with thousands of guests, you can expect hidden vacation homes between gently undulating dunes and natural beaches. Oh, how "hyggelig" (cozy) - one of the Danes' favorite words. Slowing down is a top priority for our Nordic neighbors. The best tips for a vacation in southern Denmark!
The island of Møn - dream beaches and hiking oasis
It's easy to slow down on the small island of Møn. Once famous for its herring fishing, tourists now flock to its fine sandy beaches. Due to its manageable size, Møn is great for hiking - there are tombs from the Stone Age to discover. Take a stroll through the main town of Stege and climb the chalk cliffs of Møns Klint: park your car in the large parking lot in Store Klint and marvel at the 8 km long cliffs of up to 128 m high chalk rock.
The fairytale island of Funen - ideal for families
A little further north lies the fairytale island of Funen (Fyn). It owes its nickname to its most famous son, Hans Christian Andersen, who was born here in Odense. Fyn is an island for families.
Away from the quiet bathing bays, there is an incredible amount to see on a vacation in the Danish South Seas. Travel to Odense, the most beautiful town in the area, and immerse yourself in the Scandinavian Middle Ages among the old houses - the church "Sankt Knuds" is particularly worth seeing. Take a trip to the large zoo, where children can watch busy marmots and even hand-feed giraffes (Søndre Blvd. 306, www.odensezoo.dk). And in the open-air museum "Den Fynske Landsby" in Odense, you can get an authentic impression of Danish country life in the 18th century (Sejerskovvej 20, admission approx. 8 euros, children free).
The beaches of Funen are quieter again: the sea is cleanest in the north near Bogense, and you will find the most variety in hidden bays near Fynshoved. And families love the quiet, shallow beaches of Skåstrup, Båring and Hasmark. Our tip: Rent a cottage near the beach for your vacation in the Danish South Seas and plan day trips from there.
Vacations in the Danish South Seas: islands and castles
Water sports enthusiasts will be happy on a boat trip through the South Funen archipelago, for example. Shaped by the ice age, these small islets lie like forgotten pearls in the middle of the Baltic Sea. So beautiful! Or how about visiting one of the 123 legendary castles and manor houses that are the subject of eerie fables and enchanting stories? The most magnificent of them, Egeskov Slot Castle, is even still inhabited(www.egeskov.dk/de). There are 8 museums in the fairytale Renaissance moated castle. The farm buildings, parlors and knights' hall can be visited, and the castle garden is a dream. Between fragrant hedges and flowerbeds, children can be princesses or become knights of Egeskov on Segways in the play forest.
Fancy a vacation in the Danish South Seas? No matter which of the romantic islands you choose, the nearest beach is always close by.
