What a treat!

The Danes like to make themselves comfortable. This includes a crackling open fire, a sip of aquavit or a glass of wine - and, of course, good food. And that's why the northerners invite you to three festivals centered around oysters, apples and onions.

Oyster Week from October 14 to 23, 2016

The traditional highlight at the start of the oyster season in the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea region is the Oyster Trophy Week. This year, the oyster food festival takes place from October 14 to 23 and presents seafood lovers with a wide range of exceptional culinary delights. Oyster Week also provides tips and background knowledge on oysters and other specialties from the sea that surrounds Denmark on all sides. In addition to oyster and mussel safaris, the Oyster Trophy Week program also includes cooking events and culinary evenings with well-known Danish top chefs.

The local rangers know the best oyster beds - and the tides. The oyster-hunting tours often go far out at low tide and usually last between four and five hours. The strenuous walk through the mudflats is rewarded with a treat that couldn't be fresher: If you want, you can open one of the Pacific oysters - which came to Denmark from the Pacific Ocean in the 1990s and are popular with gourmets all over the world - on the spot and try them with a little salt and lemon juice. They are often accompanied by a glass of sparkling wine in proper style.

Apple festival from October 17 to 23

In the middle of the Danish kingdom, surrounded by the Little and Great Belt, lies Funen. The country's third largest island owes its reputation as the "Garden of Denmark" to its year-round mild maritime climate and its particularly fertile soil: Funen's nutrient-rich soil grows excellent fruit and vegetables.

The Apple Festival (Æblefestival) from October 17 to 23 in the municipality of Assens is a tribute to the apple. Here, in the west of Funen, many old apple varieties are still grown. The undisputed queen is the popular "Ingrid Marie" variety, which was discovered on a local farm in 1910. The production of cider, must and apple sausages, tours of apple orchards, lectures and the health aspects of apple enjoyment are among the festival themes.

Onion festival on October 21

Things get a lot spicier on October 21 at the Onion Festival in Bogense in the north of Funen. On this day, the streets of the harbor town are transformed into a large folk festival-like market where all kinds of onions and vegetables are sold. There is also free onion soup and music. At the tart competition at the end, a jury will choose the best onion and vegetable tart of the festival.
