Happy Movember! The renaissance of the moustache

Whether Tom Selleck as Magnum or Freddie Mercury - the moustache was their trademark. For some the epitome of a sexy man, for others an absolute horror. But what does it look like nowadays? How do women react to it and do men still wear it at all? And above all: what does it have to do with prostate cancer whether a man wears a beard or not? We have compiled the most important facts here.

Why do so many men wear moustaches in November?

Tastes are different

It's not just people's tastes that differ, but also the number of possible ways in which a beard can be worn. In general, a study from 2016 found that bearded men appear more potent. It is assumed that men with beards have a higher level of the sex hormone dihydrotestosterone. It was also found that women like three-day beards. A total of 66% of respondents voted in favor of this variant of facial hair. Unusual beards, such as the "goatee", are popular with just 3% of the women surveyed. And the moustache, which was so successful in the 1980s, received the worst rating of all beard variants with just 2%.

Movember

But why is the classic moustache comparatively common in November despite its poor rating? The reason is a campaign that takes place every year in the penultimate month of the year. "Movember" (from the English word "moustache" and November) is a collective campaign in which men grow a moustache for a month to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer. The reason for this is that men die on average five years earlier because they rarely speak openly about illnesses. The fact that many men wear a moustache this month means that many people question it and are made aware of it. The moustache is practically the symbol for "Movember".

So dear ladies, whether full beard, moustache or clean-shaven: today's man wears a beard to please, to feel good about himself or perhaps to draw attention to something. And in November in particular, you should keep an eye out for a possible increase in moustaches on the streets. Who knows, maybe the moustache will soon make a comeback and enjoy greater popularity.
