Singles' Day: cheers to being unattached

Couples in love, romantic candlelit dinners and uninhibited love-making may dominate the streets, restaurants and movie theaters every year on February 14. But just one day after Valentine's Day, it's the turn of singles and single people. February 15 is Singles' Day!

Singles' Awareness Day is celebrated on February 15.

Singles Day is said to have been created by a certain Dustin Barnes, a student at Mississippi State University who was presumably single himself at the time of his brainwave. Even his US compatriots don't seem to know exactly how much truth there is behind this assumption. After all, there doesn't even seem to be an official founding date for the so-called "Singles' Awareness Day".

Abbreviation "S.A.D." - Irony or coincidence?

The abbreviation "S.A.D." also suggests a little wink from the inventor. Because the English word "sad" translates as "sad". However, whether singles spend their special day in mourning is up to them. After all, being unattached is a great way to celebrate with friends or like-minded people.

For all those who think Singles' Day is just as superfluous as Valentine's Day, there are fortunately other great occasions that can be celebrated, such as

  • Earthworm Day
  • Gumdrop Day (National Gumdrop Day in the USA)
  • Flag Day (in Canada)
