A long history and an excellent present
Only in the area around Cape Town, the so-called "Western Cape", is serious viticulture taking place in South Africa. Only here are the climatic conditions for viticulture given: sufficient moisture from the nearby ocean and warm sunshine. Dutch sailors recognized this over 350 years ago and planted the first vineyards. However, the production of top wines has only really taken off since 1990, when South Africa ended apartheid and embarked on the path to a modern democracy.
Since then, a whole series of exceptional wineries have flourished in South Africa, which regularly receive international recognition. Thanks to a special and diverse climate, well-known wine-growing regions such as Stellenbosch and Constantia produce wines that have nothing to hide from their European siblings. And with Pinotage, South Africa has produced a grape variety that has become very popular internationally.
