Palatinate joie de vivre on the "German Wine Route"

With more than 23,400 hectares of vineyards, the Palatinate is the second largest wine-growing region in Germany. The 85-kilometer "German Wine Route" connects around 130 wine villages in the growing region between Bockheim in the north and Schweigen on the border with Alsace. The mild climate of the Palatinate not only allows grapes and almonds to thrive. Olives, lemons and fruity figs also enrich the wine-growing region. The joie de vivre of the Palatinate people is known far beyond the Palatinate! It is therefore not surprising that the wine festival season begins in spring with the Almond Blossom Festival in Neustadt-Gimmeldingen and only ends in mid-November with the Martinus Wine Festival in St. Martin. The Palatinate also has plenty to offer in the way of culinary delights beyond the famous Palatinate Saumagen. From traditional home cooking to Michelin-starred cuisine, there is much to enjoy.

Now to the wines of the region. The Palatinate is considered the number one Riesling region and has been the largest Riesling region in the world since 2008. So you should definitely not miss out on a Riesling tasting at one of the local winegrowers. The Palatinate also offers red wines of exceptional quality: Dornfelder plays the leading role, but Pinot Noir and Portugieser are also particularly important and well worth a sip!
