Vegan at work: How to make a plant-based diet work at work

Veganism is more than just a trend. In Germany, around 900,000 people live a purely plant-based lifestyle and avoid animal products. This lifestyle doesn't just apply to food, it also influences the consumption of everyday goods and extends to the world of work. Eating a vegan diet at work is not always easy, but it is certainly feasible.

Vegan snacks for work and on the go

Finding a suitable meal is often a challenge for vegans. Small appetites are quickly satisfied, vegan spreads and tofu products are even available in discount stores. Cold couscous and pasta salads as well as homemade mueslis prepared at home are suitable vegan snacks for on the go or during lunch breaks. Also good: shakes based on soy protein, a 100% plant-based protein.

The situation is different for big appetites. Cooking at home is the motto here. You can prepare soups or casseroles with lots of fresh vegetables. Add nutritious carbohydrates in the form of (sweet) potatoes, rice, pasta or bulgur. Cook several portions and freeze the dishes in portions. This way, you always have something to take with you in the freezer that you only need to heat up at work. If you prefer a light lunch, eat a crisp salad with olive oil, avocado, pumpkin seeds and roasted nuts - an essential source of protein.

Lunchtime: eating vegan for lunch

Eating vegan during your lunch break is possible to varying degrees depending on where you live and work. In the big cities, there are more and more vegan restaurants and snack bars, but in rural areas it's usually not so easy. Always eating just salad and vegetables because there is nothing else is boring and frustrating after a while. Lunch out with colleagues can also be complicated. Because they don't necessarily want to eat lunch in a vegan restaurant. So going vegan at work also means making compromises - it doesn't have to be the Greek restaurant with the huge portions of meat.

A question of attitude: jobs for vegans

Vegans are often committed to protecting animals and the environment. Not only do they abstain from meat and eat according to set ethical principles - they also live this way. And ideally, they want to work for an employer who is also committed to animal welfare, produces sustainable goods or consciously supports a plant-based lifestyle. And so there are now special job boards on the internet that specialize in jobs for vegans. They mostly offer jobs in the health sector, jobs with vegan food producers and in vegan restaurants as well as with manufacturers of all kinds who sell sustainable vegan products from fairly produced sources. Possible employers for vegans are also PR and advertising agencies that work for clients with a vegan background.
