Cold or flu?

First of all, it is important to differentiate between a flu-like infection - commonly known as a cold - and full-blown flu, although the symptoms are superficially quite similar. Both illnesses are triggered by different pathogens. Around 200 different types of virus, such as rhino and corona viruses, are responsible for the common cold. The flu is caused solely by the influenza virus, against which you can be vaccinated. Flu symptoms usually occur suddenly and headaches and aching limbs are more pronounced than with a cold. In addition, the fever is usually higher with flu, often exceeding 40 degrees.

What causes a cold?

By definition, a cold is an infection of the upper respiratory tract. It is accompanied by a cold, cough, hoarseness or sore throat - or a combination of these symptoms. Without complications, a cold is over in three to seven days. Adults can catch it two to four times in the course of a year, and it is not uncommon for children to catch eight to ten colds in the same period.

Infection usually occurs via infected droplets that are released into the air through sneezing or coughing. The viruses enter a healthy person via the respiratory tract, causing the mucous membranes in the nose and throat to swell. Direct contact with an infected person can also lead to illness: Shaking hands, for example, allows the viruses to make their way onto the mucous membranes and thus into the body. Also dangerous: smooth surfaces such as telephone receivers, door handles and bus and train handrails. A weakened immune system is naturally more susceptible to viruses.
