A little crochet lesson
Crochet has been known as a handicraft technique in Europe since the 18th century. In contrast to knitting with its two needles, only one needle is used here, which is fitted with a hook-like point. Small accessories such as doilies or the inevitable pot holders are crocheted, as well as items of clothing such as hats, sweaters and even jackets.
If you want to get started, you will need a few basic items that are as easy to obtain as they are inexpensive: a simple crochet hook and some crochet thread, as well as scissors and a darning needle.
Which crochet thread for which purpose?
How strong the yarn should be depends on what you want to crochet. If you want to crochet something rather robust, such as a potholder, it is best to use a hard-wearing blended yarn. Thick new wool, on the other hand, ensures that garments such as sweaters are nice and soft against the skin. If you want something delicate and filigree, such as a tablecloth, a thin yarn is the first choice. But beware: stitches made from thin yarn are more difficult to knit and are therefore only suitable for beginners to a limited extent. Hairy wool such as angora or mohair is also not without its problems: it fluffs quickly and makes picking up stitches more difficult. It is therefore better to start with smooth cotton or alpaca.
And always remember: When crocheting - as with knitting - the thickness of the yarn must correspond to the size of the needle. So always pay attention to the label on the yarn!
