Rehabilitation after a stroke: no age limit for measures

Once again very lucky! The stroke symptoms were recognized in time and the emergency doctor was alerted immediately. Now 60-year-old Christa F. is recovering from her illness in hospital. She knows how important rehab is after a stroke. As soon as she has regained enough strength, she starts with the first measures. These include movement exercises.

With each exercise session, the patient becomes more confident on her feet.

Stroke rehabilitation measures are an important part of therapy, as physical and speech impairments often remain. This is due to the sudden circulatory disorder in the brain. This causes tissue and therefore nerve cells to die.

Stroke rehab: still demanding measures even over 80

The aim of rehab is to reverse these impairments - as far as possible. As a rule, however, only people under the age of 80 receive intensive training. This is because doctors previously assumed that this would no longer have much effect on older people.

But now there is a study that reveals the exact opposite! Experts from the St. Mauritius Therapy Clinic in Meerbusch and the University of Düsseldorf have found that intensive rehabilitation after a stroke can be very effective, even for people over 80. This in turn reduces the risk of remaining in need of care after a stroke.
