How to back up your data online

Cloud storage is a very modern and convenient form of data backup. You simply move your files from your computer or smartphone to a folder.

The advantages and disadvantages of cloud service providers

If you want it to be quick and easy, use cloud storage offered by service providers such as Microsoft, Google or Amazon. They take care of setting up the cloud so that the data you store there is always available. They also provide backups, i.e. backup copies, in case their technology loses data and they need to restore it. However, it is also clear that with this option, you relinquish control of your data. It is therefore very important that you can trust the provider not to go bankrupt one day or to pass on sensitive data to third parties due to negligence or political pressure.

What costs you will incur on average

The major Internet companies generally offer 5 to 15 gigabytes of storage space free of charge. However, if you want to archive not only individual documents, but also large quantities of photos and videos, this space is quickly used up. In this case, experts recommend using storage space of one terabyte. The prices for this are on average between 70 and 100 euros as an annual rental price. No matter which service provider you choose: If you regularly upload large amounts of data, fast Internet access is helpful, otherwise uploading will take a long time.

Special offer for uploading photos

"Google Photos is a completely free cloud where you can store unlimited photos and videos. However, the files are shrunk to a slightly smaller amount of data so that the resolution is no longer quite as high. The cloud is also available as a practical app for smartphones: it stores the photos and videos automatically.

Alternatives for private use

Don't want to entrust your data to a service provider? Then you can also set up a cloud at home yourself, for example by connecting an external hard disk to your DSL router. With the help of the installed router software, you can then access the files on the hard disk via the Internet. You can find information on how to do this on the respective company website. A so-called NAS system (NAS is short for Network Attached Storage) works in a similar way, but here the server and hard disk(s) are combined. You can use such a system to store all files immediately and retrieve them just as easily. If you enter the term "NAS system" on the Internet, you will find numerous helpful instructions on setting up and maintaining it.
