The 10 biggest insurance myths busted

Germans like to insure themselves. Currently with over 431 million policies. But some insurance policies are surrounded by the most fantastic rumors. And once the damage is done ... people are often surprised. Alexander Vorgerd from www.transparent-beraten.de explains.

Myth 1: Cell phone gone? Fortunately, the insurance pays

The cell phone is gone - help! If you're consoled by the fact that your cell phone insurance will at least pay for a new device, you're not always right. If you act with gross negligence, for example by leaving it on the counter, you won't get anything.

Myth 2: Stumbled, broken leg - that's an accident

Accident insurance usually covers you, but there must be an external factor. If you trip over your own feet, you get nothing. "If the accident happens during working hours, statutory accident insurance will cover it," says the expert.

Myth 3: Red cars are more expensive to insure

This persistent rumor is based on the following assumption: red cars are more conspicuous and are checked more frequently by the police. And if you are stopped more often, you will be asked to pay more often. But the insurance company doesn't care. "The color doesn't matter," says Alexander Vorgerd.

Myth 4: The so-called Oktoberfest insurance

This is not an all-round carefree package for a visit to a festival, but only applies to an organizer. They are allowed to insure their event.

Myth 5: Running a red light and having an accident - who pays?

There is a persistent rumor that the person who caused the accident has no claim after the traffic offence. But this is not true. Many insurers are accommodating.

Myth 6: Summer tires in winter - no protection applies

An accident in December - with summer tires? "If it's a mild ten degrees, insurance cover applies," says the expert.

Myth 7: Your party is rained out - what now?

Is there cancellation cover for a private party because the weather is bad? Unfortunately not. "Weather insurance is offered, but only for commercial parties, such as open-air events," says Vorgerd.

Myth 8: Buildings insurance applies in the event of flooding

"When it comes to flooding, you need an extension to your buildings insurance, i.e. natural hazard insurance."

Myth 9: No problem, I'm covered by legal expenses insurance

This is not always true. If you have a dispute with your neighbor, you can rely on private legal protection. But when it comes to property boundaries, you need different cover.

Myth 10: There's insurance for everything

A misconception! Companies only insure things for which statistical data is available. Nobody insures against abduction by aliens.
