The road to success: 10 phrases that will get you ahead in your job

Sometimes it's quite comfortable: just acting exactly as instructed, doing the same tasks every day ... But in the end, it's not fulfilling. If we want to get more out of our work and become more successful, we have to stand up for our ideas and projects. This is the only way we can have a say in the direction we take in the future and how happy our job makes us. Setting and achieving goals: Ten important guiding principles on the road to success.

Do you want to get ahead? Then get active: stand up for your ideas in your job with confidence.

"I'm going my own way - and I won't let anyone stop me"

A great attitude that has nothing to do with egotism, but with healthy self-confidence. You don't need to belittle yourself in front of anyone. The motto is: set high goals and achieve them. The higher the hurdles you overcome, the more you will grow. You will be amazed at how much more you can do than you actually thought - if only you dare.

"I decide when I decide"

Don't let yourself be put under pressure in the office. Even if the pace of work seems to be getting faster and faster and everything should be done immediately: There is strength in calm. If you take the time to carefully weigh up the pros and cons of a yes or no, you will appear confident and calm - and will certainly make the right choice in the end.

"I'll hold out - but don't hold out"

For very few of us, there are no obstacles on the path to success and everything always goes smoothly. Sometimes a task doesn't suit us, sometimes a colleague gets on our nerves. As long as it's only a short phase - grit your teeth! It makes you incredibly proud not to let yourself be put down straight away, but to try to improve the situation yourself. However, if you notice that your job no longer fulfills you and is sapping your energy, it's time to pull the ripcord. Look for an alternative that supports and challenges you - and also makes you happy.

"I like taking on new challenges"

When you are assigned a new task or position, is the first thing you often think: "I've never done this before, I can't"? If so, then simply rephrase the sentence from now on: "Never done it before - and I'm happy to take on the new challenge." With this attitude, you will not only learn to trust yourself more, but your boss and colleagues will also realize how much undiscovered potential you actually have.

"I take criticism seriously - but not personally"

Criticism can be very helpful: If it is well-founded, well thought-out and objective. Then it helps us move forward, leads to a better outcome of a task, allows us to work more productively and become more successful. But what if there is nothing of value in the criticism? What if it attacks us instead? Then it is our right not to accept it, but to let it bounce off us. The problem is then clearly not with us, but with the person who wants to hit us personally. Not a chance!

"I have a good network and am constantly expanding it"

Are you looking for a career change? Are you looking for new opportunities to advance your career? Then a good, reliable network is helpful. Start building up contacts as early as possible - online via portals such as Xing or LinkedIn, offline at conferences, trade fairs or in the canteen. The larger your network, the more likely you are to hear about new, exciting projects.

"I trust my judgment"

Sure, if we are unsure, it makes sense to ask others for advice. But we shouldn't think from the outset that our own judgment is worth nothing. Why not take a bolder approach and just do things - without making sure beforehand? If it goes wrong, you have to take responsibility, of course. But it's much more likely that things will go well - and that you'll receive plenty of praise for your decision in the end.

"I'm good at falling down - and getting up"

Victor Kiam, an American entrepreneur, once said: "Even if you fall on your face, you're still moving forward." In other words: Make mistakes! Because they help you move forward, even if it hurts. If you are always waiting for the perfect moment and the perfect conditions to tackle things, you will miss out on numerous opportunities to develop further and achieve your goals.

"I can assess my abilities - and use them"

To really internalize this sentence, it helps to list your own strengths in detail and remind yourself of them again and again. And then: make yourself visible. Don't wait for someone to discover your talent. Don't work silently in the background, but look for specific tasks that will convince others of your abilities. Your boss will be impressed - and you will have more fun at work.

"I do a lot - and deserve respect"

Do you actually get enough recognition for what you do? Is it appreciated how hard you work? If not, demand it, as well as an appropriate salary for your work. And don't worry that this might go down badly: If you can justifiably represent your interests, you will show assertiveness - and determination.
