50 billion bacteria on our dishwashing sponge
Unfortunately, all you can say is yuck! Because up to 50 billion bacteria live on one cubic centimeter of kitchen sponge. These include pathogens that can trigger respiratory infections in weaker people. The fatal thing is that washing it out thoroughly only makes things worse, because harmless germs die in the process and aggressive ones continue to spread. And of course you don't want to spread these germs when cleaning in the kitchen!
Wash the kitchen sponge regularly in hot water
Instead, you should wash the sponge in the washing machine every two to three days at a temperature of at least 60, preferably 90 degrees. Preferably with powder detergent and in a wash bag. The same applies to cleaning cloths. If sponges and cleaning cloths are in good condition, they do not have to be thrown away straight away. This saves money and resources! It is now often not recommended to clean them in the dishwasher, as this would only spread the bacteria. You can also read about the real hygiene traps lurking in the household.
