The stomach hurts, it rumbles and grumbles in the stomach, sometimes sufferers suffer from constipation, sometimes from diarrhea. Doctors call these digestive disorders irritable bowel syndrome - because there is nothing organic to be found. Around ten to 15 percent of people in industrialized countries suffer from it.
The cause is still not known
Irritable bowel syndrome - what to do when digestion goes crazy? For a long time, doctors believed that irritable bowel syndrome was a psychosomatic disorder . However, it is now suspected that a disturbed exchange of information between the brain and intestines is responsible. Digestive disorders such as irritable stomach syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome have been known for over 100 years. "However, we still don't know the exact cause," explains Dr. Ahmed Madisch, Head Physician at the Gastroenterology Clinic at Hanover's Siloah Klinikum. "Those affected have increased sensitivity in the abdomen and can therefore perceive even normal bowel movements as painful."
Irritable bowel symptoms occur suddenly
The nervous system in the gut is directly connected to the brain by nerves. Stress or problems are transmitted directly to the intestines. Irritable bowel symptoms occur over a longer period of time and at regular intervals. And they occur completely out of the blue .
Intestinal infections could also be the trigger
Researchers suspect that bacteria can damage the intestinal nervous system. In around one in ten irritable bowel syndrome patients, an infectious cause is currently assumed to be the cause of the illness. Pain and bloating are treated "As we don't know the exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome, we also don't know how to preventit," says Dr. Ahmed Madisch, "but we can treat the symptoms so that patients can lead a normal life again."
Irritable bowel syndrome treatment with herbal active ingredients
Many of the synthetic drugs that were used to treat irritable bowel symptoms had to be withdrawn from the market for safety reasons. Modern pharmaceutical research has found a plant-based solution: A high-dose combination of peppermint and caraway oil (e.g. Carmenthin, pharmacy) noticeably relieves painful cramps and is well suited to an irritable bowel diet. Peppermint and caraway also have an antibacterial effect: they fight the bad intestinal bacteria that cause the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Caraway oil calms the nerves of the digestive system and reduces unpleasant flatulence. The effect sets in within one to two weeks.
Massage against pain
Stroke back and forth from the stomach to the navel for one to two minutes, first with the left hand and then with the right hand, without applying pressure.
Then place both hands on the stomach so that the thumbs are next to the navel. Stroke counterclockwise in small circles with the right hand for one minute, repeat with the left hand, also for one minute.
Finally, let both hands circle on the abdominal wall at the same time. Repeat once a day.
