Vaginal thrush symptoms

Itching, burning, redness and discharge are the typical symptoms of vaginal yeast infections. If the vaginal flora is not in balance, yeast fungi can spread and cause inflammation. Vaginal fungus (medically: vaginal mycosis or vaginal candidiasis) must then be treated.

Don't be ashamed: What causes vaginal fungus and how does it develop?

The good news first: you don't get this annoying infection on the toilet, nor does it have anything to do with uncleanliness. So there's no need to be embarrassed about going to the doctor.

The vagina is an ideal breeding ground for fungi, because they love it moist and warm. We women therefore provide an excellent breeding ground with our sexual organs - and fungi are part of a healthy vaginal flora. It is only when the pH value is no longer right that a disease occurs.

The vaginal flora can become unbalanced for various reasons, such as a weakened immune system or metabolic disorders and hormonal fluctuations. Stress and psychological strain can also affect the vagina. Also be careful with antibiotics: Some preparations can cause vaginal thrush. Talk to your doctor before taking them so that you don't end up having to treat a vaginal fungus as well as a cold.

Is vaginal fungus contagious?

As a rule, you don't get infected with vaginal fungus through sex, nor do you infect your husband. An infection can be painful during sex, which is why many women don't feel like having sex. However, sex and vaginal yeast cannot be separated. However, do not provide a breeding ground for the spores and protect yourself with a condom during sexual, anal or oral intercourse. Also use a lubricant to avoid injury to the vagina - this can lead to you catching a vaginal fungus again.

Treating vaginal fungus: How do you get rid of the annoying fungus?

Vaginal fungus can be treated in various ways, from creams to tablets or suppositories. It is important that the mucous membranes really recover. Treatment should therefore not be discontinued too early, also to prevent chronic disease. In some cases, it may be advisable to treat the man as a precautionary measure. Discuss this with your doctor. Pay more attention to hygiene: it is best to wash towels, washcloths and underwear at 90 degrees.

Using a cream

Depending on the product, a vaginal cream is applied several times a day for several days in a row - regularity and intensity are crucial for success. The cream is applied thinly with the fingers (wash thoroughly before and after) to the entire vaginal area up to the anus. Many creams are not only effective against the fungus, but also soothe the irritated mucous membrane.

Use of vaginal tablets and suppositories

Vaginal tablets or suppositories are usually inserted deep into the vagina using an applicator. As with vaginal cream, this is repeated several days in a row. Depending on the manufacturer, combined preparations are also often offered, i.e. vaginal tablets and cream. Thanks to the dual application, vaginal fungus can be controlled relatively quickly, depending on the stage. However, this is only possible if the preparations are used as prescribed!

3 home remedies for vaginal fungus

Many women ask themselves whether it is possible to fight vaginal fungus with home remedies. The answer to this question is yes. However, it always depends on the severity of the infection. In the case of a severe infection, home remedies should only be used as an adjunct, as there is no way around drug treatment. In this case, however, home remedies for vaginal thrush can have a supportive and soothing effect. If the infection is minimal, home remedies can sometimes be sufficient. Important: It is better to play it safe and consult your gynecologist. If the fungus is not treated properly, it will keep coming back. Don't show any false shame and don't prolong the illness unnecessarily - the fungal infection has nothing to do with a lack of hygiene! There is therefore no need to be embarrassed in front of your doctor.

Yoghurt

Mildly acidic yogurt shifts the skin pH value into a range that fungi and bacteria do not like. This is why yoghurt is a recognized home remedy for vaginal fungus. The effect can be further enhanced with anti-inflammatory honey.

Application: Mix a cup of natural yogurt with three teaspoons of honey (preferably organic products). Apply, leave to work for 15 minutes and carefully remove with toilet paper. You can also soak a tampon in it - remove it after two hours. It is best to wear a panty liner so that your underwear does not become soiled.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil contains many saturated fatty acids that can kill vaginal fungus. It also accelerates the healing of wounds on irritated skin and soothes inflammatory processes.

Application: Melt a tablespoon of coconut oil and apply the oil to the vulva (vaginal opening area). Repeat the application two to three times a day. Tip: Add a drop of oregano oil: the spice is said to have an antibiotic-like effect against bacterial germs.

Aloe vera

Many people have an aloe vera plant at home - you can use it!

Application: Cut off a thick fleshy leaf and squeeze out the juice. You can also take the fleshy leaf contents and puree them until a homogeneous mass is obtained. Spread the puree two to three times a day. Important: Do not use the outer skin, only the contents of the plant!

For all applications, it is recommended that you wash your hands thoroughly before and after (preferably disinfect them). Or wear disposable gloves. (Source of the home remedies: Praxisvita.de)
