Insurance doesn't pay - what now?

Insurance is one of those things: no customer wants their company to approve every claim virtually without checking it, because that would drive up the premiums. However, when we report an insurance claim ourselves, we very much want the insurance company to pay out. That's why it's important that you know the weak points.

Household contents

The top priority after a theft or burglary is to submit a list of stolen property to the police and the insurance company. It must be complete, otherwise the insurance company may not pay out. If you want to do this perfectly, leave copies of bills for expensive items with friends or in a safe deposit box. Incidentally, only the current value, not the replacement value, is reimbursed when you report an insurance claim. In the case of water damage, settlement is usually unproblematic.

Liability

In the case of personal liability insurance, competition is fierce and reported claims are frequent. It goes without saying that insurers employ lawyers to defend against claims. A classic example: you help someone move house and damage something. This is an act of courtesy, which means that the insurance company will not pay unless you have also insured courtesy damage. The advantage is that children up to the age of seven are not liable for any damage caused. If someone makes a claim against you because, for example, your child has driven a scooter into a parked car, your insurance can help you to defend yourself against the claim.

Legal protection insurance only makes sense if you have also insured your needs. Example: You are dismissed and want to defend yourself, but your policy excludes professional legal protection - in which case the insurance company will not pay. You can insure various modules, such as legal protection for tenants. Long-term customers can save money by including an excess in the policy. The first case is often free anyway. Incidentally, family disputes are always excluded.

Travel cancellation

If a chronically ill person cancels their trip, this is unfortunately the case in most cases: The insurance company will not pay. Tip: If you have not received treatment for six months, but only for a check-up, you can have this confirmed by your doctor and still make a claim in an emergency. Please note: If the trip has already started, you only have a claim if the trip interruption is also insured!
