Carry out vehicle registration online: These documents are required

If you want to drive your car on the road, you must first register your vehicle with the relevant road traffic office. This is unavoidable. If an accident occurs, the police can use the license plate number to identify the vehicle owner and take further action. Anyone driving on public roads without license plates is also liable to prosecution. Drivers who are caught without a license plate can expect a fine of up to 60 euros and a point in Flensburg. It is very easy to obtain a license plate. A license plate for Berlin, Hamburg, Munich or Cologne can also be created within a short time.

Registering a vehicle is now very straightforward and simple. In addition to a visit to the local registration office, car owners can also conveniently register their vehicle online. Only a few documents are required for this to work. In addition to a valid identity card or passport

  • the eVB number of the vehicle insurance (insurance confirmation)
  • Registration certificate part I (for used cars)
  • HU report (also for used cars)
  • Registration certificate part II
  • Account details for the SEPA direct debit procedure (for vehicle tax)
  • COC papers for new vehicles (EU certificate of conformity)

relevant. It is also possible to deregister or reregister a vehicle online. This also only requires a few documents. However, if you have the registration certificate I and II, as well as the HU report, the license plates and the ID card, this task is not complicated either.

How vehicle registration works online

Online registration of vehicles with general license plates has been possible since 1.09.2023. Seasonal license plates, short-term license plates or e-plates can also be obtained. To do this, car owners first visit the online portal of the responsible registration authority. Here it is necessary to identify yourself with your identity card or passport. This is followed by entering all relevant vehicle data such as the VIN or security code (located on the vehicle registration document). After entering the eVB number of the insurance company and registering a desired license plate, only the personal bank details are important for collecting the vehicle tax. If this data is available, the registration for the vehicle is already complete.

The car owner receives an electronic registration certificate within 30 minutes. This means that they can drive the vehicle on the road immediately after registering online. However, the electronic certificate must be kept in the car and presented to the police if necessary. The notice itself is valid for the next ten days. During this time, the car owner will receive all the important documents by post, as well as the necessary stickers to be affixed to the license plates.

These costs are to be expected for online registration

The fees for vehicle registration are regulated uniformly throughout Germany. Absolute advantage: Online registration has even been reduced slightly thanks to the new vehicle registration regulations. New vehicle registration online costs 16.30 euros. At the office, the minimum price is 27.60. If a vehicle is to be re-registered, the price online is 18.09 euros. A visit to the registration office, on the other hand, costs 26.80 euros - so anyone considering online vehicle registration can benefit from some cost savings.
