Christmas isn't even over yet and now I'm already supposed to be thinking about the next festive season? But yes! Because good preparation takes time and that's why it's worth choosing a few wines for New Year's Eve before Christmas. The advantage of early planning is also that the hustle and bustle between the holidays will pass you by in a relaxed manner, giving you more time to spend with your loved ones. And with a good wine selection in hand, you can look forward to New Year's Eve with peace of mind.
In principle, a New Year's Eve celebration is always similar: after the warm-up phase comes the great euphoria and then the general contemplation. And there are different drinks for each phase of the evening. We have put together a few ideas, but of course these are just suggestions. Feel free to get creative yourself!
The warm-up phase
The evening naturally begins with a glass of sparkling wine at the reception. Depending on your budget, this doesn't necessarily have to be expensive champagne. A delicious sparkling wine from German vineyards will also lift the mood in this initial phase. If you like, you can also drink the sparkling wine during the meal. However, you should tend to go with the food here and still wines usually go better. Which wine goes with which food is not so different from the Christmas menu, and therefore the same tips apply for a successful pairing of food and wine. In the vinoa wine search, we have selected the right wines for the 100 most popular festive dishes.
The hearty part of the menu may be rounded off with a sweet dessert, or you can go straight to the jocular part of the evening program and hand out the doughnuts (possibly prepared with mustard). For those who are lucky with their choice, a fine dessert wine, e.g. a Trockenbeerenauslese or an ice wine, is the perfect accompaniment. Unfortunately, we can't recommend a good wine to go with the mustard Berliner, which is really unlucky!
The great euphoria
The evening has already progressed a little and the hour when the ghosts of the old year are to be banished with a big noise is drawing ever closer. How about not unnecessarily polluting the environment with toxic fireworks this year, but investing a little more in a very special drop to welcome in the new year? The classic par excellence always looks elegant and dignified: champagne. It tastes good as classic white champagne or as champagne rosé, from a normal or magnum bottle, the only limit being your own wallet.
If you want to toast just as elegantly and tastily, but a little more sparingly, go for a Spanish Cava, an Italian Franciacorta or a high-quality sparkling wine.
Contemplation
At some point, all loved ones are hugged and congratulated on the New Year. Fingers and feet are a little frozen in the winter cold - so it's high time to warm up a little again. Naturally, a hot mulled wine is the perfect way to do this. Quality mulled wine from a German vintner is far less of a headache than the cheap alternative from the discount store. White m ulled wine in particular is worth a try!
Back in the warmth, the first resolutions for the New Year are then announced and the future is thought about in joyful contemplation. A full-bodied red wine is the perfect companion for such thought-provoking activities. Whether a good Bordeaux from France, a fine Barolo from Italy or a Petite Sirah from the USA - such complex wines are perfect for rounding off a wonderful New Year's Eve.
We wish you and your loved ones happy holidays and a happy new year 2017! Celebrate well!
