Yay, we're celebrating strawberry season 2018 from May to September! Here you will find exciting facts about our favorite fruit as well as great recipes.

Strawberry season 2018: When is strawberry season?

Strawberries are available all year round thanks to imports. However, our domestic strawberries are mainly on sale in May, June and July. The harvest time depends on the weather. The 2018 strawberry season therefore also varies depending on the region and weather conditions. However, there is an increasing focus on protected cultivation, so that last year, according to the BVEO, in addition to 115 thousand tons of strawberries from the open field, around 20 thousand tons were also harvested from foil tunnels.

Is the strawberry the Germans' favorite fruit?

The figures speak for themselves: an impressive 230 thousand tons of strawberries were consumed in Germany in 2017. That's almost 3 kilos per person - even though there were weather-related harvest losses last year. It remains to be seen whether the 2018 strawberry season can top this and whether Germans will continue to opt for local strawberries. On average, consumers spent around 4.30 euros per kilo.

More vitamin C than lemon

Our strawberries are a concentrated vitamin package. At around 55 milligrams per 100 grams, they contain even more vitamin C than lemons and oranges. They also contain vitamin A, calcium and magnesium. And that's not all: despite their sweetness, our favorite fruit is also quite low in calories with only 32 kcal per 100 grams.

How do strawberries stay fresh for a long time?

If you want to enjoy the 2018 strawberry season to the full, you should pay attention to the following when buying strawberries: Ripe strawberries have a glossy sheen and are evenly red in color. They can also be recognized by their aromatic scent. To prevent the delicate fruit from getting bruised, they should be packed and transported well protected. However, small spots do not make them any less durable. If the strawberries cannot be eaten immediately, they will usually keep for several days unwashed and covered in the fridge.

What is the best way to prepare strawberries?

The running stream of water from the tap can quickly damage the delicate strawberries and also takes away their aroma. It is best to clean the fruit in standing water and only remove the leaves and stalks after washing.
