Many women want to cut a good figure, especially in summer, and therefore start a strict sports and nutrition program early on: exercising every day, dieting or fasting days are not uncommon. Sabine P. (48) also likes to exercise regularly and eat consciously to maintain her weight. The retail saleswoman feels healthy and fit, but her heart has been going crazy for a few weeks now. She suffers from irregular heartbeats, especially when she wants to relax in the evening after a stressful day.
Important electrolytes are depleted
Under physical stress, such as during sport, the body is increasingly depleted of electrolytes through heavy sweating, including those that are important for a steady heartbeat: Potassium and magnesium. A diet low in nutrients, as is often the case with diets, also deprives the body of these important micronutrients. The heart can indicate this deficiency with additional beats, so-called extrasystoles, which can be felt as palpitations, heart stumbles or pauses in the heartbeat sequence.
Potassium and magnesium complement each other
A balanced supply of potassium and magnesium is therefore necessary to keep the heart in sync. They should preferably be taken together, as the two electrolytes complement each other in their effects and facilitate their absorption.
Combined potassium and magnesium preparations from the pharmacy, for example Tromcardin® complex from Trommsdorff, are a good way of replenishing low levels. This can compensate for an existing micronutrient imbalance. Nevertheless, it is important to maintain a healthy balance when it comes to sport and nutrition, as extremes are rarely good for the body, let alone the heart.
