The skin under the eyes shimmers brownish to bluish black, making those affected look tired and ill. Unfortunately, the cause of the dark shadows is anatomical: the skin in this area is four times thinner than the rest - it is only half a millimeter in diameter, which is why the blood vessels underneath shine through darkly. And there is no cushioning fatty tissue here.
The body is tired
There is no medical explanation as to why some people are prone to dark circles and others are not. The fact is, however, that anyone with dark circles under their eyes has usually taken on too much and should get some rest.
Cooling compresses
Quitting smoking, drinking less alcohol, regular exercise and getting enough sleep in a well-ventilated room, preferably with your upper body elevated, will make the unsightly dark circles disappear. Cooling compresses on the eyes also help. Wet tea bags or cucumber slices are better avoided - they can irritate the skin.
When to see a doctor?
Dark circles are not usually a cause for concern. However, if they become more pronounced, you should see a doctor - they could be a sign of liver disease.
