Vertical greenery: privacy protection and decoration with climbing plants

Balconies, patios and gardens can be green oases and places of tranquillity. However, the idyll is often disturbed by unwanted glances. Climbing plants and privacy fences provide a quick remedy. If planted correctly, they can also increase the growing area and become an eye-catcher in their own right.

Surrounded by greenery: making the privacy screen an eye-catcher

A high-quality privacy fence is the best basis for privacy on the balcony or in the garden. Sturdy models not only protect against prying eyes from nosy neighbors. They also keep out dirt and wind, have a slightly insulating effect against noise and provide shade. This allows you to enjoy your outdoor area to the full. However, the privacy screen only becomes truly decorative with a few additional features that bring further benefits.

Privacy fences are wonderful bases for climbing or hanging plants. Evergreen climbing plants provide a lively decoration all year round and the ideal background for changing decorations. Plant hanging baskets or hanging flower pots with flowering plants create colorful accents. Herbs enrich the kitchen and create an aromatic atmosphere. The changing planting makes it possible to create new combinations again and again. The choice is not limited to ornamental plants and herbs.

Other options include hanging strawberries, columnar fruit, berries and vegetables. Eggplants, cucumbers and zucchinis grow steeply upwards, as do some tomatoes. In these cases, the privacy fence serves as a stabilizing support and can even be planted on both sides, depending on its position. If only a small area is available or if the privacy screen needs to be able to move, beds with trellises are a good option. Equipped with castors, they can be easily moved to the desired position and are therefore ideal for balconies or terraces. While lettuce and vegetables can be planted in the planter, the trellis can be planted with fast-growing plants. Nasturtiums, passion flowers or blue rain, ornamental pumpkins or wild vines are not evergreen and are only hardy to a limited extent, but form a dense wall of foliage in a short space of time. This makes it possible to change the planting every year. The fast-growing plants can also serve as placeholders for slower-growing but hardy plants. When it comes to plants, the design possibilities have not yet come to an end.

Creative privacy screen design - these options are available

A trellis or fence is not always necessary for a green privacy screen on the balcony or in the garden. A few tall plants are sufficient for smaller sections. Suitable options include

  • Bamboo
  • elephant grass
  • elderberry
  • arborvitae
  • physalis
  • Columnar fruit
  • Columnar juniper

In addition to plants and planted privacy fences or lattices, there are other decorative elements and alternatives for creating privacy in outdoor areas. Fences made of branches are just as suitable as blackberry hedges or shelves. Weather-resistant shelves offer the greatest versatility. The shelves can be used for growing vegetables alongside flowers, insect hotels, lanterns and herb pots. Practical accessories can be stored in the lower sections, while the upper area and the side facing the sun are ideal for small solar panels. These in turn can be used to operate LED fairy lights, which create a romantic atmosphere at dusk and at night and embellish the privacy screen. When run along the plants and thus hidden during the day, they do not detract from the greenery, but even emphasize it in the dark.

Discreet basis and creative design for privacy screens

The best effects and the greatest variety can be achieved with a combination of a sturdy privacy fence and appropriate planting. In this way, security and privacy are maintained all year round, while the green design can be changed again and again.
