At 40, 50 or 60: The best heart healers

The philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach (1804 -1872) already knew that a perfect human being requires not only the power of thought and the power of will, but also the power of the heart. And strengthening our life motor is easier than you might think.

Do you know the secret of a melodious orchestra? All the musicians follow the conductor and play to the same beat. Our body also has such a conductor: our heart. It sets the pace of our lives and keeps everything in harmony. However, it can only fulfill this important task if we help it to stay healthy, i.e. "whole", at every age. And if it ever gets out of rhythm, we need to provide it with targeted support. How do we do this? Prof. Dr. Curt Diehm, cardiologist and Medical Director of the Max Grundig Clinic in Bühl (Baden-Württemberg), reveals the best heart healers:

1 Please smile!
No joke: if you want to do something good for your heart, then laugh more often. This will dilate your arteries and improve blood flow to your vital motor. But you haven't felt like laughing for a while? Then Prof. Dr. Curt Diehm advises you to seek psychological help for the sake of your heart. Because: "Depression is just as much a risk factor for heart attacks as high cholesterol levels."

2 Measure your blood pressure correctly
High blood pressure also causes serious problems for the heart. It thickens - the possible consequence: a heart attack. "Most and the most serious heart attacks occur between 3 a.m. and 11 a.m.," explains Prof. Dr. Curt Diehm. You should therefore check your blood pressure as soon as you get up. If it is too high during this time, i.e. above 140/80 mmHg, this is a serious alarm signal for a weakened, diseased heart. However, correct blood pressure adjustment by a doctor and careful medication can relieve the strain on our most important muscle - and even heal it.

3 Prevent diabetes
Diabetes also increases the risk of a heart attack, as diabetes promotes vascular calcification. This makes it all the more important to maintain a balanced blood sugar level. Avoiding drinks containing fructose, for example, helps your heart to stay fit.

4 Turn up your favorite music
Songs and melodies also have a proven positive effect. Which music is good for you is a matter of taste. 40-year-olds may love pop, 50-year-olds pop or jazz and older people the Beatles or André Rieu. The effect is always the same: according to a study by the University of Maryland, listening to music promotes blood circulation. Great prevention against heart attacks or thrombosis.

5 Clear your head
A walk in the woods reduces heart-threatening stress, as does yoga. And a study by the University of Calgary has now shown that meditation even heals right down to the cells. An overloaded heart benefits directly from this.

6 Care for your teeth thoroughly
"Smouldering inflammation endangers the heart vessels," warns Prof. Dr. Diehm and therefore advises: "Make sure you have chronic inflammation treated - this includes inflammation of the gums. Also brush your teeth carefully, use dental floss and an oral irrigator and go for a dental cleaning."

7 Listen to your body
"Pressure in the chest and a feeling of tightness are signs of hardening of the coronary arteries," says cardiologist Diehm. "We should be grateful for these alarm signals." Because if you react correctly now, go to the doctor quickly and get a stent after a cardio-CT scan, for example, you can prevent further heart disease. Stents are real heart healers.

8 Don't forget your tablets!
In the case of cardiac arrhythmia, on the other hand, so-called anticoagulants help: they ensure that no blood clots form. Expert Diehm: "In the case of absolute arrhythmia in atrial fibrillation, taking them can protect against heart attacks and strokes - the heart beats in time again." Provided you take the tablets regularly.

9 Soak up the sun
If it's shining from the sky during a walk, our skin can produce vitamin D. If we have too little of it, the risk of a heart attack or stroke increases. Vitamin D levels should be at least 30 ng/ml. Vitamin D tablets can help with a proven deficiency.

10 Keep moving
In principle, endurance training such as jogging or even special cardio sports are ideal for preventing heart disease. This is because heart attacks are often a consequence of our lifestyle, too little exercise, an unhealthy diet or cigarette consumption - and many heart healers are in your own hands.
