High heels: unhealthy for feet and back

They look great, make beautiful legs and seem super sexy. But high heels are unhealthy, they damage bones and tendons and cause shortened calf muscles, crooked toes and back problems. A heel height of just three centimetres can damage the foot due to the constant pressure on the ball of the foot. And: bruised toes also suffer. How high heels affect your health:

High heels: Sexy, but poison for your health

High heels: unhealthy for your back

High heels cause the pelvis to tilt forward, resulting in a hollow back. This causes pain that can radiate from the back up to the neck and head.

... the hips

High heels are bad for your health because they change the way you walk. The cartilage of the hip joint is stressed and can wear out more quickly. A probable consequence of wearing heels for years: Osteoarthritis.

... the calves

If you constantly walk on your toes, you run the risk of shortening your calf muscles and atrophying your shin muscles. On flat shoes, your lower legs will hurt.

... the knees

The altered gait also hyperextends the knees, and the pressure on the joints increases, threatening problems with the meniscus and cartilage injuries.

... the ankles

Another reason why high heels are unhealthy: You rarely walk safely on high heels and have to constantly balance your feet when walking. This puts strain on the ankle joints and increases the risk of twisting an ankle, sprains, torn ligaments or fractures of the fibula.

... the foot

Even a 7.5 centimeter high heel puts 76 percent more strain on the arch of the foot than a flat one. Painful hammer toes and bunions can develop.
