Diet could be a trigger

Eating habits can be to blame for heavy perspiration. Easily digestible foods such as fruit, vegetables and salads have therefore proven to be an effective remedy against sweating. It is better to avoid strongly seasoned meals, which make you sweat even more. You should also watch your coffee and alcohol consumption, especially in the evening. And: people who are overweight generally tend to sweat more easily. Losing weight also prevents cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

See a doctor if you have unexplained sweating

Sweating, especially at night during sleep, can indicate breathing problems caused by snoring, the onset of the menopause, hypoglycaemia in diabetes or a thyroid disorder. But blood and lymph gland cancer could also be the cause. Anyone who is prone to unexplained sweating should definitely see a doctor to find out the cause.

Around one million Germans suffer from what is known as hyperhidrosis. This is a genetic condition in which the sweat glands simply produce too much. There are several treatments for this. Special deodorant creams help, the neurotoxin Botox paralyzes sweat production and the sweat glands can also be surgically removed or treated with electrotherapy.
