Minijob: What do I need to know?

What makes a mini-job a mini-job in the first place?

The salary limit. You are not allowed to earn more than 450 euros a month. Mini-jobbers can basically work in all sectors - commercial or in private households. The most popular sectors are retail, business services and hospitality. Women, for example, often work as sales assistants, waitresses or domestic helpers.

Can I also do a mini-job if I work full-time?

Anyone can take on a mini-job - even pensioners. However, employees must obtain permission from their boss. This can be done verbally or, even better, in writing. The employer can prohibit the mini-job if the activity is contrary to the interests of the company. For example, if you would like to start working for a competitor or would only turn up to work sleepy-eyed due to the working hours of the mini-job.

How is my mini-job salary taxed?

The good news is that you don't have to pay any tax on a mini-job - because your salary is below the marginal earnings threshold. However, mini-jobbers have also been subject to pension insurance since 2013. You can object to the payments. However, we recommend paying into the pension fund, especially for commercial jobs - because the percentage for the employee is only 3.7 percent. The advantage: you will accumulate more years of insurance - and there are various pension benefits for those who have been insured for many years.

Is there a limit on mini-job working hours?

Theoretically not. But since the introduction of the minimum wage of 8.50 euros, you automatically exceed the 450-euro limit if you work more than 53 hours.

Can I have several mini-jobs?

Yes, but this does not always make sense: if you have a full-time job, all salaries are automatically added together and taxed if you have two additional mini-jobs - even if the part-time jobs together earn less than 450 euros. If you do not work full-time, you can have as many mini-jobs as you like. The only important thing is that you do not earn more than 450 euros a month in total - otherwise you will have to pay tax.

How and where can I register a mini-job?

As an employee, you don't have to do anything. The employer registers his employees with the mini-job center. But please note: you must take care of your own health insurance.
