Wine knowledge to show off: Terms from the summer series

We like to enjoy a good glass of red or white, but our knowledge of wine is not always excellent. Especially in restaurants, it can be very confusing when the waiter throws around technical terms about quality and taste. So you can have your say.

Do you know your way around wine?

Auslese
This wine is made from noble rotten grapes and is usually sweet. Spätlese wines, on the other hand, tend to be dry.

Barrique
Wines that have matured in oak barrels. This applies above all to many red wines, but rarely to white wines.

Bouquet
Describes the aromas of the wine. If they are very varied, this is referred to as a complex bouquet.

Cuvée
The wine has been blended from several grape varieties. This says nothing about the quality.

Oechsle
Unit of measurement for sugar content. The measurement takes place in the must and is particularly important for dessert wines.

Tannin
Tannin in the grape skin, which makes the taste more bitter. Barrique wines are richer in tannins than others, as the wooden barrel also contains tannins.

Tear
Drops on the inside of the glass after swirling. Also known as stained glass among experts.
