The Danes show us how it's done: Happiness is HYGGEborgenheit

Why are some people happier than others? Because they have discovered hygge, the new Danish philosophy of life. We have decoded the formula for happiness for you.

Have you been longing for evenings at home more and more often lately? Lying on the couch in thick woolen socks, snuggled up in a warm blanket with a good book in your hand? Or sitting in front of the fireplace with your partner, enjoying a cup of tea and deep conversation? If so, this does not mean that you have become old and comfortable. On the contrary: you're in the best of company - and fully in line with the hygge trend!

A little guide to happiness

Hygge (pronounced: Hügge) is THE Danish export hit. Hardly any other word is used so often when it comes to describing the Danes' philosophy of happiness. And the Scandinavians have every right to be proud of it. After all, the country has been ranked among the top countries in the "World Happiness Report" for years. Hygge is far more than just a lifestyle, but above all a question of attitude. Translated, the term means nothing more than "coziness" or "security" - and that is something different for everyone. A walk with your loved ones on a late summer's day. Fresh coffee with cinnamon buns. A games evening with friends. In short: moments in which we relax to the maximum. Sounds simple? It is, but it's also unusual for us dutiful Germans. After all, hygge is first and foremost about slowing down our fast-paced everyday lives, which often stress us out both at work and in large parts of our free time.

Running to the gym and constantly watching what you eat? Unhygge! Obsessively pursuing the search and pursuit of happiness? Not helpful either! Hygge turns inwards. And makes the little things in life important. Like not thinking about how many calories the chocolate mousse for dessert has. Skipping yoga class and watching a DVD with your girlfriend. Finishing work on time, even if the boss still wants the finished concept. Simply developing a feeling for the people around us. But first and foremost - and this is important - also for ourselves and the moments that make our lives worth living.

Happy people fall ill less often

If you're still not convinced about hygge, let me tell you: happiness experts are! Many medical studies clearly show that there is a direct link between positive feelings and the immune system: Contentment strengthens the immune system, reduces stress and relieves pain. And hygge makes you happy. We think so: You don't need more arguments than that!

BY THE WAY

WARM LIGHT IS ESSENTIAL
28 percent of Danes light a candle every day. According to happiness experts, hygge is unthinkable without it. Because only this warm, cozy light can really relax us.
