People who have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep often blame the problem on stress. This is certainly true in many cases. In many cases, however, sleep problems simply have something to do with our diet! There are foods that prevent good sleep. So before blaming sleep problems on stress from the outset, you should check and adjust your diet, for example by keeping a diary.
You should never eat these 8 foods before sleeping
1. alcohol
Another beer or glass of wine in the evening? It often turns into a second or third glass. Alcohol in the evening definitely causes sleep problems because it raises blood pressure. With a high pulse rate, it is almost impossible to sleep through to the next morning.
A month without alcohol: what it does to our bodies
2. chocolate, jelly babies & co.
Sugar also drives up blood pressure, as this food is pure energy that needs to be broken down. If you fill up before going to bed, you won 't get a restful night's sleep.
3. licorice
Snacking on some more licorice in front of the TV? Liquorice not only contains a lot of sugar, but also the plant substance glycyrrhizin, which also causes blood pressure to shoot up. With licorice, you practically start the turbo booster in your body. Sleep is out of the question.
Important: The right mattress for restful sleep
4. watermelon
Even the healthy and delicious watermelon is not a good idea before going to bed, as it consists mainly of water and increases the urge to urinate. If you don't want to have to go to the toilet all night long, try another fruit instead.
5. salad
And here's another healthy thing that can cost us our sleep: Salad. Many people cannot tolerate raw vegetables in the evening because they can lead to bloating, stomach pressure and even abdominal pain. If you experience this yourself, it's better to stay away.
6. chips
We all love them, but eating chips in the evening is not a good idea. Deep-fried potato sticks contain a lot of fat, which is difficult to digest. The stomach therefore has a lot to do with digestion, which can give us a restless night.
Well tolerated: avocado and tomato salad
7. wholemeal bread
Wholemeal bread can upset many people's stomachs late at night - it has to process the fiber, which - as with salad - can lead to stomach pressure and bloating. If you are still hungry late at night, try a piece of rye or white bread, as these are easier to digest.
8. black tea
Do you like drinking tea? Then drink varieties that promote sleep in the evening, such as camomile or lemon balm. Secondary plant substances reduce stress hormones and allow us to rest at night. The situation is different with black tea, as it contains caffeine - which is known to make you alert and lively. Mate tea and green teas are also stimulating and therefore more suitable for the morning.
