Circulatory disorders in the inner ear
As with tinnitus, the causes of sudden hearing loss are not clear. Possible causes could be circulatory disorders in the inner ear or impaired conversion of sound waves into nerve impulses. This is because if the inner ear is not sufficiently supplied with blood, the so-called hair cells of the cochlea cannot perceive sound without interference.
Common symptoms of sudden hearing loss: those affected suffer from beeping
Infusions of saline solution, dextran or hydroxyethyl starch can be given to normalize blood circulation. Ginkgo extracts can also improve blood circulation and the tinnitus disappears again. It is often a concomitant symptom of sudden hearing loss. In this case, the entire hearing does not fail - instead, those affected suffer from beeping, whistling or buzzing. In more than half of all cases of sudden hearing loss, the symptoms disappear on their own, which is why doctors advise patients to wait and see. If the patient is still hard of hearing or even deaf after three to four days, cortisone may be injected.
Treatment with music and therapy
If the symptoms have not subsided after six months, the experts speak of chronic tinnitus. New approaches to therapy: block out the annoying noises with your favorite music in headphones. Behavioral therapy can also help those affected to lead a good life despite the illness.
Preventing tinnitus
Experts estimate that in ten years' time, one in two Germans will suffer from hearing loss, sudden deafness or dizziness. The reason: our super-noisy environment. Children and young people who constantly listen to loud music through their headphones are particularly at risk. The working group "The Healthy Ear" recommends an effective remedy: use earplugs as often as possible. A blessing for ears and nerves.
