A few household remedies can help with sudden nausea. We'll tell you what they are.

What can cause nausea?

Whether due to an intolerance, after eating spoiled food, during pregnancy or due to an infection - nausea is a warning signal from the body when it is fighting harmful substances. If it is accompanied by vomiting, it is a protective reflex in which the body wants to eliminate harmful substances. The vomiting center in the brain is closely connected to the digestive tract of the human body and the bloodstream. Mild stimulation of the vomiting center only results in a feeling of nausea, while strong stimulation leads to vomiting. As soon as the stomach senses a feeling of fullness after an overly large meal, for example, this information is transmitted to the vomiting center via impulses.

The causes of nausea cannot always be traced back to a single cause. Nausea is a symptom that can result from a wide variety of conditions. The most common causes of nausea are

  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • food poisoning
  • food intolerances
  • Consumption of large meals
  • Disgust
  • Accompanying symptom after consuming large amounts of alcohol ("hangover")
  • Accompanying symptoms during pregnancy
  • Overexertion during sporting activities
  • Sunstroke
  • seasickness
  • Psychological problems (e.g. stress, anxiety)
  • Side effects of medication or treatment during radiotherapy and chemotherapy

These home remedies help against nausea

It sounds banal, but it helps enormously with nausea and especially gastrointestinal complaints: only eat easily digestible food. If you feel nauseous, avoid hard-to-digest, fatty meals and opt for foods such as rusks, pretzel sticks or bananas. Especially after consuming large amounts of alcohol, it is advisable to make up for any deficiencies and get your circulation going with food. Hearty, salty and sour meals are particularly popular as a "hangover breakfast". The following also applies:

  • Drink: To provide the body with sufficient fluids, vegetable soup is a particularly good home remedy for nausea.
  • Make sure you don't wear clothes that are too tight. A belt, on the other hand, which presses on your stomach and only increases the feeling of nausea, should be avoided.
  • If you feel nauseous, go out into the fresh air for a while. Sit on the balcony or in the garden or alternatively go for a walk.
  • Another tried and tested home remedy for nausea is tea. Varieties such as camomile, peppermint, fennel or ginger are best. The ingredients soothe the stomach and ensure that the feeling of nausea subsides. Fennel, aniseed or caraway tea also have a digestive and antispasmodic effect.
  • Lemon extract is also a good home remedy for nausea. Drizzle a few drops of lemon juice into a glass of water and drink it. However, avoid carbonated water at all costs!
  • Rest and relaxation are the be-all and end-all. Rest at home and avoid stressful situations. It is best to take a nap in a comfortable position where the feeling of nausea is least noticeable.

What you should look out for in addition to home remedies for nausea

You don't need to worry about nausea during a diagnosed gastrointestinal inflammation, as this is a natural side effect of this condition. For some people, nausea occurs after a very winding car journey, a boat trip on a rough sea or on an airplane. This is due to irritation of the vestibular system. Try to sleep, this switches off the visual stimulus. To prevent travel sickness, plenty of fluids and a small meal are ideal. Avoid coffee, alcohol and cigarettes before traveling. Ginger is a proven home remedy for nausea when traveling. If you don't want to chew on a piece of ginger, you can also find the tuber in capsule form in the pharmacy.

As long as you only suffer from nausea and it does not occur frequently, you can rely on the above-mentioned home remedies for nausea for treatment and relief. However, if you experience accompanying symptoms such as dizziness, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, diarrhea, visual disturbances or headaches, you should consult a doctor to have your health checked more closely. This also applies if the nausea is persistent or lasts longer.
