There are many causes of night sweats and it is not always easy to find them.

The cause of night sweats can often be quickly remedied

The causes of night sweats can be very different and quite banal: one glass of alcohol too many, spicy food - or the bedroom is simply too warm. Or too cold - because above a room temperature of 15 degrees, the body tries to warm up and heats up. These causes are easy to eliminate, and then there will be no more night sweats.

Hyperhidrosis: disorders of sweat production

Sometimes, however, night sweats have no cause at all. Doctors call this nocturnal hyperhidrosis. This is a disorder in sweat production and is completely harmless - but also quite annoying, as those affected sweat profusely while sleeping, often wake up in the morning without a good night's sleep and then feel exhausted during the day.

Idiopathic night sweats: overactive sweat glands

However, night sweats can also be caused by overactive sweat glands. This is referred to as idiopathic night sweats. There is no explanation for this. Nevertheless, you should consult a doctor if you suffer from persistent night sweats.

Relaxation exercises can help

Stress and problems are a common cause. Because nothing distracts you at night, your mind works through difficult issues in your sleep - just like in a nightmare. Relaxation exercises and a regular evening walk can help to clear your head. Strong hormonal fluctuations during the menopause are also often accompanied by night sweats.

When night sweats are a warning sign

Suddenly occurring heavy night sweats should always be examined by a doctor. A diseased thyroid gland, diabetes, metabolic disorders, inflammation of the inner lining of the heart and tuberculosis can also cause this phenomenon. And even for some types of cancer, heavy sweating during sleep is a first warning sign that should be taken seriously.
