What helps better against back pain: heat or cold?
If the muscles are tense and hardened, heat is recommended. This stimulates blood circulation, which temporarily alleviates the discomfort. For example, take a bath or sit in front of a red light lamp. In the case of inflammation, however, cold is appropriate.
Are there actually any new therapies for back pain?
Patients often ask this question. The answer is: exercise is the be-all and end-all for back pain. One of the most effective measures is still special training that strengthens and stabilizes the muscles in the spine, such as Pilates. Unfortunately, very few people do this consistently. And so the complaints return.
How often are the intervertebral discs the cause of complaints?
Not as often as many people think. Only five percent of cases are caused by the intervertebral discs. In the majority of patients, the muscles are far too weak and/or the ligaments are shortened, which leads to back pain. However, some patients also have problems with the vertebral joints, such as vertebrae that shift easily.
Is it true that arnica can provide relief for back pain?
Yes, there are indeed medicinal plants that can bring about an improvement in acute and chronic pain. This has also been proven by studies. A healing ointment based on a high-dose arnica tincture (Klosterfrau Arnica Pain Ointment, pharmacy) has proved particularly effective. It has a decongestant, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect. This is partly due to the ingredient helenalin from the medicinal plant. It suppresses the activity of the proteins that cause the pain. At the same time, the essential oils stimulate blood circulation, which helps to relax the muscles. The ointment can therefore also be used for sprains and bruises.
What helps with lumbago?
As a damaged disc is pressing on a nerve, the doctor or physiotherapist first tries to stretch the spine in order to relieve the pressure on the disc. This is done on a sling table. At home, the stepped position is recommended. This means that you lie on your back and then raise your legs so that they form a right angle. Place a blanket underneath beforehand so that your back does not freeze.
