According to a recent study, just one glass of beet juice a day can lower blood pressure. This is because beet contains nitrates, which dilate the blood vessels - blood circulation is optimized, oxygen and nutrients can be transported and the brain is better supplied with oxygen. Incidentally, nitrates from food are not unhealthy, on the contrary: the body converts them into vital nitric oxide.
Betanin: This special red plant pigment from beet has an antioxidant effect. It protects against cell damage and changes and has an anti-inflammatory effect. And this in turn protects against cancer. Betanin also strengthens the immune system and effectively prevents infections.
Betaine: The active ingredient related to betanin lowers homocysteine in the blood. Homocysteine is a metabolic waste product. It is harmful to the heart and can trigger a heart attack. Betaine also reduces fat in the liver and can thus reduce the size of a fatty liver. And: the active ingredient lowers cholesterol levels.
Iron: Women in particular often have too little of it in their blood. Beet contains 1 mg of iron per 100 g. An adult needs one to two milligrams a day.
Folic acid: Beetroot provides the human body with vital folic acid. One 100-gram tuber covers a fifth of the daily requirement. Folic acid is one of the B vitamins and is an essential vitamin. This means that it must be taken in with food. Folic acid plays an important role in all growth processes in the body, especially in cell division. The vitamin is also important for amino acid metabolism.
