Sport for cancer: just as important as medicine

Is exercising with cancer healthy? Yes, researchers have found out. If you walk at a brisk pace, you will soon notice that your metabolism gets going and your physical and mental well-being improves immediately. This is not only true for healthy people. Exercise does much more, as new studies with mice show: The immune system is revved up and can fight tumor cells more efficiently.

Stay active: Studies have shown that sport is healthy for cancer patients.

And that's not all: sport also strengthens the muscles in cancer patients and helps to combat the debilitating fatigue that many patients suffer from. All of this together confirms that exercise and sport are just as important during and after cancer as drug therapy. Experts therefore focus on both aspects of treatment.

Sport for cancer: a new model project aims to make people more active

Patients who were already more active before their illness find it easier to motivate themselves. Those who are reluctant to exercise, on the other hand, find it more difficult. For this reason, a pilot project has now been launched at the Cancer Center at the University of Dresden in cooperation with the National Center for Tumor Diseases in Heidelberg. Cancer patients who have completed their treatment are taking part. The "Active in Aftercare" motivation program aims to find out how people who are reluctant to exercise manage to integrate more sport into their everyday lives after cancer in the long term. Once it has been established how well this works, this program could be offered throughout Germany in the near future.
