Barmer Women's Run: Running training with Heike Drechsler

Jogging 8 kilometers, three weeks preparation time - and I'm supposed to manage that as an amateur athlete? No problem, Heike Drechsler is sure of that. After all, we all did well during our running training with the Olympic champion. But what is it actually about?

20 women and one goal with Olympic-standard support

End of May, Hamburg, 7 pm local time. 20 like-minded women have come together in the gym, all with the same goal: the "Barmer Women's Run" on June 17 in Hamburg. I am also taking part. I will also be running in just under three weeks - my first official run! I'm starting to get nervous, after all, I wouldn't describe myself as an experienced runner. But that's not the point of the run, which is only for women. Rather, the focus is on the fun, the experience, the day in the company of many other women. Nevertheless, of course I want to do it! I can do 5 kilometers, I know that. But 8? I'm skeptical. But Heike Drechsler is not, because the 1992 and 2000 Olympic champion praises our small running group for our stamina.

It's easier to run together

In preparation for the "Barmer Women's Run", "Women's Health" invited us to run together with Heike Drechsler. And I was right in the middle of it! Around me, a well-mixed group of 20 women, some more, some less trained. After a short warm-up, we set off for the city park, where Heike taught us a little running ABC at our first stop. According to the expert, you should incorporate this into your running training as often as possible. Whether it was correct rolling, running with raised arms for better torso stability or running up to a sprint - Heike Drechsler demanded a lot from us. As a testimonial for the "Barmer Women's Run", the ex-professional athlete naturally has a few insider tips up her sleeve that I didn't want to miss out on.

We did it!

We were on the road for around 1.5 hours and were very grateful when we were able to finish our running training with a short cool-down, stretching and breathing exercises, which, by the way, should not be missing from any training session.

Will I be able to do my first real run on June 17? That remains to be seen, at least I can no longer claim that I haven't been professionally prepared .
