Evening primrose seeds contain 24% oil. It turns rancid quickly.

The flowers are light yellow and only open at nightfall. But then they glow like burning candles - hence the evening primrose's name. The tall-growing plant originally comes from North America. Even the Native Americans used its healing powers, especially for skin problems.

Omega-6 fatty acids

The effective ingredients are extracted from the seeds. They contain oil, composed of gamma-linolenic acid and linoleic acid. Both belong to the polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids. The body cannot produce these itself, it obtains them from food. The body then incorporates them into the skin. There they strengthen the skin barrier and help to retain moisture.

Evening primrose oil for neurodermatitis

People who suffer from this skin condition in particular swear by evening primrose oil. Researchers have discovered that some neurodermatitis patients may lack an enzyme that converts omega-6 fatty acids in the body. Among other things, this defect could cause the symptoms of dermatitis. Evening primrose oil, which is applied externally to the skin, helps to counteract this.

It can do even more

Evening primrose oil is particularly good for us women: the oil from this medicinal plant can help with a feeling of tightness in the breasts before menstruation, premenstrual syndrome, hormonal imbalances and the desire to have children. However, as with many other natural active ingredients, the effect only occurs after three to four months. Patience is required.

Relief from rheumatism

Studies have shown that evening primrose oil also helps with rheumatoid arthritis. The Handbook of Medicinal Plants recommends a daily dose of two to three grams. Evening primrose oil is available as capsules or oil from pharmacies.
