Not just in the run-up to Christmas: classic gingerbread spice

The ingredient "gingerbread spice" is available in every supermarket. But what exactly is "gingerbread spice"? Is there a standardized mixture? And can I perhaps even mix this delicious spice, which tastes so wonderfully like Christmas, myself?

Is there THE typical gingerbread spice?

We all know the typical gingerbread flavor, but there is no fixed mixture. The mixtures vary depending on the region.

In the past, the spice mixture for this specialty was a closely guarded family or professional secret! In southern Germany, cinnamon is a main ingredient. The further north you go, the less cinnamon the mixtures contain. Cloves and allspice, on the other hand, are only present in small proportions here, but are used generously, especially in Eastern Europe.

Everyone is the master of their own gingerbread spice

Why not experiment and create your own mixture? The following spices are suitable: Aniseed, cardamom, galangal, ginger, coriander, nutmeg, mace, cloves, pepper, allspice, sandalwood, star anise, licorice, vanilla, cinnamon, lemon and orange peel.
