This way, freshly bought cherries keep longer:
Leave the stem on
The green stem of the cherries ensures that they stay fresh and juicy for longer, as it continues to supply the stone fruit with moisture. If the stem has already been removed, bacteria and fungi can penetrate the fruit flesh more quickly through the open area and cause mold, for example. So when buying cherries, always make sure that the stem is still attached. It should also look as green and smooth as possible.
Always remove cherries from the packaging
Correct storage makes a big difference to the cherries ' shelf life. The fruit is often sold in a plastic bowl or plastic bag, which should be removed immediately at home. The reason for this is that the climate in the plastic packaging is far too humid.
Tip: Store the cherries in a tin lined with kitchen paper. The paper absorbs excess moisture, which could lead to mold growth. The cherries will keep for about two to three days in the fridge.

Only wash cherries before eating
We often wash the cherries as soon as we take them out of the packaging. However, we should not do this, but wash them immediately before eating. Although washing removes chemical residues, bacteria and dirt, it also destroys the fruit's natural protective coating. The fruit therefore stays fresh for longer if we wait until before eating before washing it.
Preserving or freezing
If you still want to have some of the fruit after the cherry season, it is advisable to preserve it. Freezing is another way of preserving cherries for longer. To do this, place the fruit in portions in freezer bags and put them in the freezer.
Tip: Leave the cherry stone in the fruit before freezing so that the cherries lose less liquid. The pit is also much easier to remove when half-frozen.
