Sweet lupins: lower in calories and healthier than soy

People on vacation in Portugal know the sweet lupin as a crunchy snack to go with their beer - pickled sweet lupin seeds are on the table in almost every bar. Here in Germany, the seeds of the cultivated plant are mostly processed into flour, yogurt or ready-made mixes for patties. Thanks to this diversity, sweet lupins are slowly overtaking soybeans as the vegan all-purpose weapon. And rightly so, because it is even lower in calories and healthier!

Sweet lupins as healthy fillers

The edible relative of the garden lupin is filling, but leaves less air in the stomach than other legumes. At around 40 percent, they contain as much protein as soybeans, but a third less fat and carbohydrates. This makes sweet lupin seeds the ideal source of protein in a vegan diet and a top weight loss aid. A study by the University of Halle has shown that the proteins have a cholesterol-lowering effect. The gluten-free seeds also prevent bowel cancer and diabetes with their fiber.

The plant is a real nutrient bomb

Like soybeans, sweet lupins contain plant oestrogens that influence the hormone balance, but in 50 times lower quantities. This makes its calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron content all the higher. Many antioxidants ward off pathogens and protect cells from ageing. However, anyone who is allergic to soy or peanuts should test whether they can tolerate the legume.
