When high blood pressure drives away desire

Sexual listlessness seems to be a woman's domain. But it is not. Men suffer from it too. Of course, we only talk about "suffering" when we have a problem with something in the first place. This is the case with all sexual dysfunctions. So if a man or a woman has no sexual contact at all and it doesn't bother him or her, then everything is fine. However, if he or she would like to have sex or is encouraged to do so by his or her partner, things become difficult. If he or she still doesn't feel like it, we need to look at what's behind it. Relationship problems? Pressure to perform? Too much stress? Or perhaps an illness such as high blood pressure? This is not at all uncommon and can have a direct impact on desire and libido.

One in three Germans suffers from high blood pressure

High blood pressure can be confidently described as a widespread disease. According to Apotheken-Umschau, a third of Germans between the ages of 18 and 79 have high blood pressure. But that's not all. Two thirds of adults who are considered healthy also have levels just below the high pressure limit. And that's not all. Five percent of children and 52 percent of male and 26.2 percent of female adolescents are also affected. That should give us pause for thought! Some of the causes are easy to identify: smoking, alcohol, obesity, lack of exercise, chronic stress and excessive use of salt. Heredity could also play a role in high blood pressure. Other causes are still being researched. Okay, children don't smoke. But one in five is overweight. I have met families where potato potato chips pass for a full meal. And they contain a lot of salt. Young people, on the other hand, are happy shisha consumers. I haven't yet found out what exactly is so great about it. Maybe it's the company they keep. However, hookahs damage the blood vessels just like cigarettes. Maybe there is a connection here. If we only warn of general health risks, this is dismissed with a wave of the hand. Sure, adults do that too. However, if we point out a connection to love, lust and passion , this could generate more interest. Even with adults. So let's grab them by the erection...

Why can high blood pressure lead to sexual problems?

You might think that high blood pressure makes us burst with lust. All the blood is pumped into the cells and we have the best erection and the hottest vulva. Fiddlesticks. It's the other way around. Due to the high pressure with which the blood is pumped through the veins, more deposits and calcium build up in the vessels (arteriosclerosis). The resistance increases and the heart has to pump even harder. The blood no longer reaches the penis in sufficient quantity. But oops, we need blood for an erection! Exactly. And that brings us full circle. Because once the penis has failed due to high blood pressure, the fear that this could happen again the next time increases. Anxiety, in turn, increases tension in the body, mind and soul and can prevent the next erection precisely because of this. Stress, in turn, can cause high blood pressure. In no time at all, we have a vicious circle and can hardly distinguish between cause and effect. But it's not just about the man. The vagina is also supplied with more blood when aroused and therefore becomes moist. If this no longer works properly, it can result in pain during intercourse. And pain rarely has the effect of increasing pleasure. Another vicious circle. Not only high blood pressure itself can lead to problems, but also the medication against it. This should definitely be clarified with your doctor.

So what can we do? We have your blood pressure measured and, if necessary, take another close look at the medication you are taking. As a precaution, we take a look at our lifestyle and consider where we can turn the screws. What about exercise? Use less salt? Quit smoking? What about alcohol consumption? I start straight away, throw away my glass of red wine and go for a quick workout.
